One Idea Worth Carrying Home

August 1, 2025

Conferences give us a lot.

New ideas. New people. New resources. Pages of notes we were certain we'd come back to.

And then we go home.

The emails are waiting. The meetings begin. Something urgent needs our attention.

Before long, much of what seemed important at the conference becomes something we meant to revisit.

I've learned not to ask myself how much I can bring home from a conference.

I ask a different question:

What's one idea worth carrying home?

Not ten.

One.

An idea I want to think about again. A question I want to ask someone. Something I heard that challenged an assumption or helped me see my work differently.

The value of a conference isn't measured by how many notes we take. It's what happens when one of those ideas changes what we notice, what we ask, or what we do next.

That may mean writing the idea at the top of a notebook before leaving the conference. Sharing it with a colleague on Monday. Putting 20 minutes on the calendar to think about it. Or simply paying attention to where it shows up in your work.

The goal isn't to remember everything.

It's to keep something meaningful from disappearing into the return to everyday life.

SOMETHING TO NOTICE

The next time you leave a conference, meeting, workshop, or even a good conversation, ask yourself:

What's one idea worth carrying home?

Every good insight deserves a conversation.
